If she didn’t, she might stare at the cliff’s edge until her face puckered with queasiness. A short metal guardrail was all that separated them from a steep plunge to the jagged rocks below. Thus, she was glad Robert had taken the top down. There was a gripping excitement in the air—the birds knew it. The sky was a light, washed-out blue, and the marine layer wouldn’t burn off until noon, yet the air was already warm and comfortable.
“It’s going to be a hot day,” she said and added, “look at the gulls,” as though the two were inherently associated.
