How to weather leather?

I have a piece of leather that im making a civil war journal out of and i need to make it look like its older specifically from the civil war..please help thanks!

If you live somewhere warm, get it wet, and sit it out in the sun for as long as you can. Rough it up a little with sand paper. Take a hammer to it, just beat it up a bit.

I like this idea, I'm gonna try and make me a leather journal thanks.
