why are some air masses in meteorology labeled by where they are coming from and

why are some air masses in meteorology labeled by where they are coming from and

others by where they're going ie: a southwest flow bringing rain to the mid-Atlantic and a 'nor'easter bringing snow- depending on th etemperature, aren't they the same?
