Typically, oil paintings may seem to yellow with age. You can get this look by coating the finished picture with a yellow lacquer.

Art supply houses will also sell a craquellure agent that will cause your painting to develop a network of fine cracks to add to the aged look, as well.

That should be plenty for you to do. Good luck with your project. Have fun with it.

Pictures can get damaged by somebody knocking into hem over time, too. Add some scratches and nicks as well. Just a few.

Adding sand is not going to achieve anything for you. Paintings are usually done on smooth surfaces and he surfaces get specially prepared to have this.

Normally, old paintings do not have rough surfaces. Even in the old days, an old work would be relined by gluing an extra canvas layer on the back. Heat from ironing this on from hot irons applied at the front left the works ironed flat and smooth.
Not only that but the artists always sought to protect their paintings by coating them with clear and shiny varnish.

Here are a few tips.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Make the pics look old by:

* Using Teabags.
You may have heard this suggestion before. This is what you
have to do. Get a teabag (you may want to use it first,
otherwise soak the teabag in warm water for a few minutes.)
Then dab the teabag over your picture, essay or letter.
If the teabag doesn't make any stains, drop the teabag
from about 10cm heigh.

* Rip the edges to make a border.
Simply rip around your pictures carefully to make it look old.
It will look great with the teabag suggestion above.
You have to be careful, though. You don't want to rip your
project in half! You may want to use a ruler to avoid this type
of accident.

* Wrinke your picture!
Roll your paper up in a ball like you're going to put it in the
bin. Then stretch it out and flatten it. It makes the picture
look like it has been to many places and it is old.
This also works very well with the teabags.

*The Sand in paint
You asked in your question how to make sand paint.
Just get some brown edicol dye and tip it in a small bowl.
Then add half a cup of normal sand (Yellow or white. Black
or brown sand looks bad and you cannot see your pic
properly). Mix the edicol dye and sand together.
Then just brush the paint & sand over you picture as
though it is normal paint.

Using tea is your best bet to get sepia tones and that 'old' look. As said before, dip it and dry it until you get the colors you want
