they can't directly communicate, however, if they scratch the ground or mark their territory it is the same as communication, the other wolves know where they have been and where the boundries of this wolves territory are by smelling the 'scent markings'. it is not complex, but tells them when territory is occupied.

First, each individual wolf has it's own unique smell. They can use this smell to locate each other.
When a female wolf is in heat she will have a different smell than normal that tells the males she is in heat.
Wolves mark territory (peeing on things) to keep other wolves from different packs away.
Hope I helped some.

I judge by what I know of dogs, as they are closely related.
They mark their territory with urine. Their bladders are adapted to pass a few drops at a time, so they don't have to drink a pint to make a mark. They also mark common areas, and they always check the others' urine messages when they pass by, and leave another message too. Each individual has a unique scent, which others easily recognize; they can also tell if the other is male or female, mature or juvenile, or if a female is in heat. I'm not sure, but I've read that they can recognize the emotional state of the other by scent.
